Let’s bust the myth about IELTS speaking part.
Most students feel compelled to use big words and sophisticated structures, believing it will bring them their desired band 9. Is it a sure fire way to get it?
Speaking part is about communication and being able to express yourself in a more informal situation, so it means you should sound natural.
If the speech is loaded with overcomplicated phrases, it’s really hard to grasp what they are saying.
No examiner is going to appreciate the flowery speech if the idea is lost and not clear. So, the best way is to prioritise clarity over complexity.
On top of that, sticking to more natural way spares you unnecessary grammar and vocabulary mistakes that might occur if you’re not quite confident with structures and lexis you opt for.
Well, don’t get me wrong, the answer shouldn’t be simplified to one word sentence either.
There are a bunch of ways how to make your students sound natural rather than stilted. And we delve into them on our IELTS courses both for students and teachers.
